As part of the level 7 aesthetics diploma, you must submit two case studies, one in toxin treatment, and one in dermal filler. This article will give you advice on how to complete your level 7 aesthetic medicine clinical case report to achieve maximum results. Template

The level seven 7 team encourages you to use the poster template that has been provided on the level seven dashboard. This has been put together to prompt you in writing your reflective document for your case studies and also include space for photographs. When the assessors are marking your work they will follow a mark scheme that is related to this template, therefore if you decide that you would prefer to use your own template you may miss aspects that are essential to gain maximum marks.

Case selection

The case studies must be completed in your own practice, this means you will not be able to use any of the cases that you have completed whilst on an acquisition aesthetics training day.

You must see your toxin treatment patients two weeks post-treatment. This means selecting your patients carefully, ensuring they are happy to have their photographs taken and that they are happy to come back after two weeks for further photographs. I would advise choosing an uncomplicated case. This makes it easier to reflect on the cases rather than having a complex treatment where you may find that you have too much to reflect on for the space allocated.

Treatment Provided

Although it’s tempting to demonstrate your wealth of knowledge with facts and statistics, in the case studies we want to see that you’re a safe practitioner that can reflect on their treatment. For that reason when selecting a toxin patient for your aesthetic medicine training, I would advise choosing one simple area for treatment, e.g. glabella process, or mentalis. This way you can easily and succinctly demonstrate your skills with toxin treatment. Similarly for dermal filler and botox® training, it is tempting to reflect on a case where you have done multiple treatments, however, I would suggest just treating one area and reflecting on that single area.

Photographs

Ensure you take good reproducible photographs of your patient, ensuring that you have make-up off, hair away from the face and a reproducible background. This will make your photographs easy to assess and easy to be reproduced after two weeks of treatment.

Consent forms

Consent forms are an essential part of treatment and you must include this within your case report, all details from your patient must be redacted by crossing out or placing a blackout over their details. We will accept scanned documents however make sure that the details are confidential. We also need a confirmation of consent for photography for the patient. This can be a simple signed document that allows you to take photographs and share them for educational purposes.

Treatment Planning

Discuss in your case study your treatment planning and treatment rationale, and relate this to anatomy pharmacology and even medical considerations for your patient. It is essential to show that you are a reflective and safe practitioner even with simple treatments to pass your level 7 diploma aesthetics course. 

Reflection

This is the most essential part of the case study. It’s essential to be a reflective practitioner to ensure you are moving forward and always improving your skills. As a level 7 delegate, it is important to reflect on the skills that you have learnt and what you would do differently.

When reflecting I would suggest marking out what went well, and what could be improved on. This could be even communication with the patient, photographs taken or even marking up skills. The examiners want to see that you are reflective and able to be self-critical in your work.
